Dem Memo Heads to White House

News  |  Feb 5, 2018

The House Intelligence Committee voted unanimously Monday evening to send the Democrats' memo to White House for review.

President Trump now has five days to review the rebuttal to the Nunes memowhich the president has claimed vindicates him in the Russia investigation – and decide whether or not to make it public.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, authored the countermemo.

ABC News:

The [Nunes] memo alleged that the dossier, authored by ex-British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, formed an "essential part" of the [Carter] Page Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) application, and that DOJ officials did not disclose to the court that the Steele was employed by Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm that received funding for the effort, in part, from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Democrats, including Schiff, have disputed that claim. The FISA court was made aware by DOJ officials of the political motivations behind the information from the Steele dossier, although the specific Democratic sources of funding were not named, sources familiar with the now-classified Democratic memo told ABC News.

CNN:

Schiff and other Democrats charge that Nunes' memo is inaccurate and misleading, and the 10-page Schiff memo goes point-by-point to counter the charges in the Nunes memo. Schiff has said he has given his memo to the Justice Department for review.

NYT:

If Mr. Trump tries to block the Democratic memo’s release, House rules allow Democrats to seek a closed-door vote of the full House of Representatives to override the president. With some Republicans now arguing for its release, the House could override the president’s decision in a rare rebuke to his authority.
