A new court filing revealed Tuesday shows why government officials believe Paul Manafort and Rick Gates are flight risks, need to remain under house arrest with electronic monitoring, and have bonds set at $10 million and $5 million, respectively.
Most surprisingly, Manafort currently holds three different U.S. passports and has traveled abroad using an email account and phone registered to a fake name.
The court document explains "defendants pose a risk of flight based on the serious nature of the charges, their history of deceptive and misleading conduct, the potentially significant sentences the defendants face, the strong evidence of guilt, their significant financial resources, and their foreign connections."
Manafort has been to "Dubai, Cancun, Panama City, Havana, Shanghai, Madrid, Tokyo and Grand Cayman Island" in the past year alone, and he and Gates both are frequent travelers to Cyprus.
