Manafort's Latest Legal Strategy

News  |  Mar 27, 2018

Paul Manafort continues to claim he is innocent while his legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the case against him in Virginia, claiming Special Counsel Robert Mueller has overstepped his bounds. Axios notes the Virginia motion is almost identical to the one Manafort's lawyers filed in D.C. on March 14th.

Manafort's legal team argues that the charges do not “arise directly from” the Special Counsel’s investigation. His team argues that they cover things Manafort disclosed to the DOJ himself in 2014. They also write that Mueller's team acted outside of its authority, “without the discipline of limits on the public resources they consume," according to the document.

Mueller's charges against Manafort in Virginia include tax evasion, money laundering, and bank fraud.
