Paul Manafort and Rick Gates appeared in a Washington courtroom Thursday, and U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, citing flight risk concerns, ruled the two men will remain under house arrest until at least next week.
A grand jury indicted the men on 12 charges, including conspiracy against the United States, money laundering, being an unregistered foreign agent and failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.
[Special Counsel Robert] Mueller's office calculated the possible maximum sentences under federal sentencing guidelines if the pair are convicted: Gates could serve up to 12 years and seven months in prison and Manafort is facing up to 15 years and eight months.
Politico reports Judge Jackson also is considering whether to issue a gag order in the case to limit lawyers' public remarks. She said in court Thursday she is open to an April trial but has not yet set a date.
Manafort and Gates will appear again Monday to address bond issues.
