Lawmakers Ask Tech CEOs for Real-Time Help

News  |  Jan 23, 2018

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, have sent a letter to Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey asking for help fighting Russian online interference:

Feinstein and Schiff letter

Feinstein and Schiff explain how Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has written a four-page talking points memo that distorts classified information in an attempt to discredit the FBI and the special counsel's Russia investigation. Shortly after Nunes and his fellow Republicans on the committee voted to make the document available to the full House, a #ReleasetheMemo hashtag popped up online pushing to make the memo public. According to Hamilton 68, the Alliance for Securing Democracy's dashboard that tracks Russian influence operations on Twitter, the hashtag blew up with Russian support.

Feinstein and Schiff letter 2

Feinstein and Schiff are asking Zuckerberg and Dorsey to conduct a forensic investigation into this real-time activity, "expose and deactivate" any malicious accounts, and issue a public report by January 26, 2018.
