Bannon Lawyers Up

UPDATE: Reuters says Bannon will testify on Tuesday:

The interview on Tuesday will focus on Bannon’s time on the campaign, not the transition or his time in the White House, the source said.

Separately, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, says he has more witnesses he would like to interview:

Besides Bannon, he said those witnesses would include Trump’s daughter Ivanka. He also said he would like Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to appear again before the committee while noting that the choice of witnesses is determined by the panel’s Republican leadership.

Steve Bannon, President Trump's former campaign CEO and White House Chief Strategist, has hired a lawyer and agreed to interview with the House Intelligence Committee.

The Daily Beast:

The Daily Beast has learned that the former top White House strategist has retained Bill Burck, of the firm Quinn Emanuel. Two sources tell us Burck is helping Bannon prepare for an interview with the House intelligence committee, which is currently scheduled for next week. Sources also said Bannon plans to “fully cooperate” with investigators.

Burck also represents White House Counsel Don McGahn and former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus for the purposes of the Russia probe, as Law360 reported last September

It is not unheard of for one attorney to represent more than one client on the same matter. But the fact that several key players with Trump administration ties have the same lawyer could irk investigators.

Until recently, Bannon had stayed out of the spotlight of the Russia investigation, but that changed when his remarks to author Michael Wolff made news.

...Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury quoted Bannon as saying that the infamous Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner with Kremlin-linked Russian operatives was “treasonous.” (Bannon later claimed that the criticism was meant only for Manafort, a seasoned campaign operative who should have known better.)

Newsweek:

Given the apparent growing distance between Bannon and Trump, the president and his associates could be concerned about what Bannon will tell the House investigators. His agreeing to participate also appears to be a win for Democrats on the committee, who have in recent interviews with Newsweek claimed the Republicans on the panel were unwilling to pursue witnesses besides those associated with alleged misconduct at the Department of Justice and the FBI.
