CNN reports two Russian-created social media accounts - one on Facebook and one on Twitter - used the name "Blacktivists" and regularly posted and promoted inflammatory content "in order to achieve the broader Russian goal of dividing Americans and creating chaos in U.S. politics during a campaign in which race repeatedly became an issue."
The fake Facebook page had more than 360,000 likes, about 60,000 more than the official, verified Black Lives Matter account. CNN says the group piggybacked on at least seven demonstrations and rallies across the country in 2016, promoting them with strong activist language to boost turnout.
The Twitter @Blacktivist account reportedly contained language and punctuation errors that, if noticed, would have drawn suspicion that the account was not being controlled by a native English speaker. CNN also notes that the wording on a Russian-crafted Facebook ad promoting Green party candidate Jill Stein turned up on the @Blacktivist Twitter account on November 2, 2016 showing how the two efforts likely were connected.
