President Piles on DOJ Assault

President Trump lashed out at his own Department of Justice on Wednesday, tweeting support for House Republican allies' ongoing effort to obtain documents related to the Russia investigation and the long-closed Clinton email probe.

NBC News:

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he was considering using his executive power to "get involved" in a document dispute between the Department of Justice and congressional Republicans that's tied to federal investigations into his campaign's ties to Russia.

It was not immediately clear what Trump means about getting "involved."

The tweet earned a quick reprimand from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who told the president, "Do not go down this road."

CNN:

The Justice Department informed Meadows and other Republican lawmakers on Monday that it would not turn over a memo Rosenstein drafted detailing the scope of Mueller's investigation because it pertains to an ongoing criminal investigation, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Speaking Tuesday, Rosenstein said the Justice Department understands Congress has an important oversight role, but not at the expense of interfering with ongoing investigations.

"There are people who have been making threats, privately and publicly, against me for quite some time," he said. "And I think they should understand by now, the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted."
