Lawmakers Concerned About More Russian Attacks

A group of House Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Tuesday asking that he arrange for the Department of Homeland Security and the F.B.I. to brief lawmakers on how Russia targeted state voting systems in 2016 in preparation for 2018.

The letter was signed by House Democrats representing 18 of the 21 states identified by Homeland Security earlier this year as Russian targets before the 2016 election.

In addition to a full briefing, the lawmakers also pressed Ryan to direct relevant congressional committees to investigate Russia’s targeting of state election-related systems.

“When a sovereign nation attempts to meddle in our elections, it is an attack on our country,” they wrote.

On a separate but related note, Senate Judiciary Committee member Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) sent a letter to Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Friday saying he does not believe their committee is on track to help defend the nation against future Russian election interference.

That is because the committee is elevating "peripheral issues," Whitehouse said, such as Hillary Clinton's relationship with the opposition research firm Fusion GPS.

The Russians "are not done with election interference in America," Whitehouse wrote. "The best measure of our committee's success is an America defended against foreign election interference in 2018. I do not see us presently on a path to meet that goal."
