Politico Playbook first mentioned, and Business Insider has expanded on the news, that former CIA Director James Woolsey spoke with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago Saturday night:
Trump and former CIA Director James Woolsey had a “lengthy conversation” at his table.
Woolsey is a witness in the special counsel's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible Trump campaign collusion.
Woolsey's primary involvement routes through former national security advisor Michael Flynn. Woolsey, who sat on the board of the Flynn Intel Group, attended a meeting on September 19, 2016 during which "Flynn and Turkish government ministers ... discussed removing the controversial Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen from US soil."
Jonathan Franks, Woolsey's spokesman, has confirmed Woolsey's cooperation with both the special counsel and the FBI prior to Robert Mueller's appointment. When asked for comment on Woolsey's conversation with Trump over the weekend, Franks posted the following on Twitter:
Business Insider has more on Woolsey's tenure with the Trump team:
Woolsey abruptly resigned as a senior adviser to Trump's transition team in January, one day before Trump was set to receive a briefing from US intelligence officials on Russia's interference in the 2016 election.
The Washington Post reported at the time that Woolsey became uncomfortable after he was cut out of intelligence talks between Trump and Flynn and that he was taken aback by Trump's plans to restructure the CIA.
