Twitter will launch a new "Advertising Transparency Center" in the coming weeks, designed to let people see every ad on the platform as well as find out who paid for it, how long it's been running, what audience it's targeting, and what additional content is affiliated with the campaign.
Political ads will face even greater scrutiny.
Advertising that refers to a specific political candidate or party must disclose the campaign backing the ad and will be marked to indicate the content is political in nature. Political advertisers will also have to publicly reveal the age, gender and geography of the audience they are targeting, how much they spend on a particular ad campaign and how much they have paid for political advertising overall.
Social networks are eager to roll out plans for self-regulation before Congress passes legislation that may be more restrictive.
