CNN reports exclusively that several Russian-bought Facebook ads specifically targeted voters in Michigan and Wisconsin, two key states, during the 2016 election.
Sources say the ads were designed to break through the crowded online space, promoted anti-Muslim messaging to some, and "appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups."
CNN points out that President Trump beat Hillary Clinton by just 10,700 votes out of close to 4.8 million ballots cast in Michigan. In Wisconsin, Trump won by only 22,700 votes.
Both Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Congressional investigators are looking into whether Russian operatives had help from the Trump campaign in knowing what ads should run where.
