Social Media Companies Invited to Testify

The Senate Intelligence Committee has invited Facebook, Twitter, and Alphabet -- Google's parent company -- to testify in an open hearing on November 1, 2017. The hearing would focus on how foreign nationals used various social media platforms to interfere in the 2016 election.

Senate and House Intelligence Committee staff will meet with Twitter representatives behind closed doors on Thursday and expect to hear similar news to what Facebook already has revealed -- that Russians set up fake accounts to push specific narratives.

Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) says he needs top experts - not necessarily top executives - to show in November:

“I think it’s more important that we get the person who’s most capable of talking about the technical aspects of what they need to do to identify foreign money that may come in and what procedures, if any, need to be put in law that make sure elections are not intruded by foreign entities."

CNN reports the House Intelligence Committee also plans to hold a public hearing with tech companies in October.
